Background
The Buried Alive Match can literally change a wrestler's career and possibly their life.. The object of this match is to throw your opponent into a six-foot deep grave. Once he is in, the Superstar must then bury his opponent with dirt and of course a shovel. One of WWE's most known Buried Alive Matches saw Undertaker lose to Vince McMahon. As a result, The Undertaker was missing from the WWE scene for months. When he returned at WrestleMania XX, however, The Undertaker now or once again the deadman.
The Buried Alive Match has become a dramatic way to end feuds and has notable rarely had a match which does not end in interference.
The SmackDown! series first taste of the Buried Alive Match came in SmackDown! vs. Raw 2006. In this version of the match the player had to weaken their opponent before dragging them the casket on the stage which would then activate a interactive mini game to decide the fate of the superstar. Alternatively a player could gain 2 finisher slots and use them to automatically put their adversary in the casket and bury them alive.
The match was used in a storyline in the season mode in which the player faced The Undertaker in the match while Eddie Guerrero pulled the strings behind the scenes.
The match returned the following years and were left mostly unchanged for the most part.
