Climb a ladder, retrieve the belt, win the match, easy right?

But this is WWE, it's never that simple because your opponent (or opponents) will have the exact same game plan and only one of you can achieve it. The Ladder Match made it's SmackDown! debut in SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role and the positive response it got from the fans has lead to it being used in every SmackDown! game since.

There's also been a lot of changes to the match as the series progressed, Just Bring It introduced many new grapples that could be used with the ladder including a suplex off the ladder and drop kicking the ladder into an opponent.

Skip forward a few years to SmackDown vs RAW 2007 to see that the Ladder Match had been given a complete overhaul. New abilities such as leaning one ladder against another and being able to run up it and spear or clothesline your opponent off the other ladder, or setting up a ladder in the corner either vertically or horizontally, either way will result in your opponent taking a unique beating. You can also drag your opponent into the middle of a ladder while on the ground and sandwich him until your stamina is drained.

The way in which you grab the belt has also changed, no longer can you just climb the ladder and press circle, now the analog sticks are your left and right arms and you have to slowly move them until you find the sweet spot, be careful not to move the analog stick too fast or you'll end up falling off the ladder and ruining your chance at glory.
