Amy "Lita" Dumas made her debut in World Wrestling Entertainment in the Spring of 2000, as a valet for Essa Rios on Sunday Night Heat. Her high-flying antics, which at times outshined the maneuvers performed by her partner/manager quickly won her a legion of fans. Within a few months, Lita was phased away from Essa and began teaming with the tag team high-glying specialists, The Hardyz. She became their part-time valet, and The Hardyz protected Lita whenever she needed it. It was around this time that she began getting involved into The Hardy Boyz's feuds as well, diving from the turnbuckle to assault Edge, Christian and even Eddie Guerrero among them.

In April 2000, Lita won a battle royal to become the #1 contender to the Women's Championship. Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley and the Faction controlled the title for a few months, and when Lita became a thorn in Stephanie's side, Stephanie made it her goal to embarrass Lita, and did so on a number of occasions. After months of feuding, it was Lita, with the assistance of The Rock who finally defeated Stephanie to win her first title.

After losing it to Ivory in October, Lita continued to manage The Hardyz. Her next major feud wouldn't be until the following Spring, when Dean Malenko began pursuing her romantically. Matt Hardy took offense to this, and Dean became a problem for both of them. Dean even went as so far to challenge Lita to a match, which was quickly lost by Lita and spun off a feud. Their infamous Sunday Night Heat rematch involved Matt's interference and a surprise victory by Lita, the two then kissed, beginning their on-screen relationship. (It would later begin off-screen as well, and spun off Lita's final heel turn in 2005.)
