Background

The Royal Rumble is an annual pay-per-view which began in 1988. The Main Event is similar to a Battle Royal but features thirty wrestlers. An elimination occurs when the opponent is thrown over the top rope and out of the ring with both feet touching the floor. The winner will be the only man remaining in the ring. Noteable winners have included Steve Austin who has won the match three times, Shawn Michaels, Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon. The winner will generally recieve a shot at the title of his choosing at the main event of Wrestlemania.

The Royal Rumble Match has always been present in WWE Smackdown games. The main differences to reality, is that the intervals between new wrestlers appearing is considerably shorter than the 90 seconds it is currently. Also, generally only 6 wrestlers are allowed in the ring at once on the game, although 8 were allowed in WWF SmackDown!: Just Bring It.

It is also possible in the later Smackdown offerings, to have normal Battle Royal matches to have an over-the-rope elimination style.
